With the latest conference of the parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity just behind us, we asked centre colleagues Maria Schultz and Thomas Elmqvist to give their perspectives on the conference; how the centre contributed and what they considered to be the most important outcomes.
The conference took place in Hyderabad, India.
Maria Schultz is head of the Resilience and Development programme at the centre and has for many years been part of the Swedish delegation to the official COP negotiations on biological diversity. Over the last couple of years, Schultz has successfully organised a series of dialogue seminars aimed to help stakeholders interact in a more informal and non-committing manner that could help the progression in the more formal, high-level negotiations.
Thomas Elmqvist is is a professor in Natural Resource Management with a key focus on the relations between urbanisation and biodiversity conservation. In Hyderabad, Elmqvist launched the world’s first global assessment on the relations between urban growth and biodiversity conservation.
